The first in the Riley Gavin and Frank Palmer crime series.

When tough-minded female investigative reporter Riley Gavin is assigned to find out why two elderly ex-gangsters were murdered on the same day, she is surprised to find herself threatened with the same fate if she doesn’t back off.
But Riley doesn’t scare easily. And she never ducks an assignment. With the help of laid-back former Royal Military cop, Frank Palmer, she follows a bloody trail from the windswept south coast of England, through the lower reaches of south London, and finds herself facing a nasty death in Spain’s gangsters’ playground near Malaga. As she digs, she unearths a deadly web of vendettas, double-crosses and hatred in an underworld at war with itself.
The prize at stake for the killers is control of a criminal empire.
For Riley Gavin and Frank Palmer, failing could mean the difference between life or death.

"...a real page turner... a slick, accomplished writer..."

NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED Gavin Palmer Book 1 edition by Adrian Magson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

The first of five novels in this series is a bit bumpy. A heroine described in a blurb as hard nosed is much more of a damsel in distress. Willful but prone to making bad decisions. There just isn't much chemistry between two leading characters Riley and Frank, and the resolution is quite rushed and unfulfilling. All and all, Adrian Magson has a way with a story, and hopefully these are just the first novel jitters. Lets see where it goes from here, because, of course, I purchased all of the books already.

NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED Gavin Palmer Book 1 edition by Adrian Magson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

An interesting rather than a great read. Not so much a 'whodunit' more a how are Riley and Frank going to get out of this.
Some nasty villains, which is always good in a crime novel, but Riley made a few too many bad or silly decisions, which is always frustrating in this genre.
I have no idea how I came by this book, a signed copy no less. It appears to be a debut novel from an author who had a reputation for writing shorter pieces. It's not my usual fayre, but I'm glad I did come by it.

This has a sense of being an old style crime novel, with old style gangsters in coastal settings and the costa del whatever. The throwback feeling sits well alongside the two chief protagonists, a freelance investigative reporter who has a mysterious camp paymaster (Charlie's Angels came to mind but as she's a reporter it would have to be Charlie's Office Angels...) together with a deceptively louche PI.

I suspect it's Magson's debut novel. If so, he is to be doubly congratulated. It works well. It is nicely paced, evenly developed, coherent, and the characters stand up well. The chief villain lacks depth but the intermediary figure he uses (an ex army fugure) has a central ambiguity which adds a little uncertainty to how the plot will resolve itself. Magson's work is short on the sort of fine detail you will find in a Crichton or a Forsythe - and he does not attempt that forensic approach, although a little more detail may evolve as he writes more, and clearly, here is a writer with more ahead of him.

The key is that we want to keep reading and we want know the answers to some things Magson holds back from us - their private lives, their futures, their motives...and wanting to know more means the author has succeeded in telling his tale. I feel sure these chracters will be back. There are open ends here sufficient to jump start any number of sequels. The fact it does feel dated is not a criminal offence. Not everything revolves around modern technology and the future of western civilisation. I can see myself quite happily ordering "another Magson".

Good stuff.
Riley Gavin, freelance investigative reporter, is on a much-deserved vacation in Spain when her agent, Donald Brask, calls her back to England. Two old, long-forgotten crime bosses have been murdered, and one of the major newspapers, anticipating a sensational story, wants background information on the two men.

Realizing there is much danger involved, Brask sends Riley to Frank Palmer, an ex military policeman, for help in her investigation. After a rocky start, the two begin working well together. As they start digging into the past, however, more and more bodies start turning up, bodies of the people Gavin and Palmer have been interviewing.

No Peace for the Wicked is set both in England and Spain, and descriptions of place are vivid and memorable. Characters range from the very nasty new crime boss to the good-guy-at-heart, John Mitcheson. The book is fast paced and action packed, and Gavin and Palmer make an unbeatable team. I look forward to reading the second book in this series, No Help for the Dying.
I have been having a great time discovering the author’s works, really enjoyed the Harry Tate series and the Watchman series. This was my introduction to the first in the Riley and Palmer series, written over ten years ago. Riley is a tough female investigative reporter and Palmer is brought in to assist her and back her up. He’s ex-military police so he knows both how to investigate and to work the streets. Very pleased that he was slightly older and no ex-SF commando. Anyway the pair are investigating some murders that suggest a new power is emerging in the British underworld…
Enjoyed it, but didn’t love it as much as the other series I mention above. A solid standard thriller but less of a page turner.
A good read
I have really enjoyed Adrian magson's previous books . This is the first of the Gavin and Palmer stories and I was looking forward to another good read. It didn't live up to my expectations and I kept thinking a good story ruined by an unbelievably stupid heroine. I won't bother with the rest of this series, they may be better, but they are not for me
This is my least favorite of Magson's usually wonderful series of books. The Gavin character is reminiscent of Superman's irksome reporter, Lois Lane, charging blindly forward, purse flailing, all for the sake of deadline, and to hell with bystanders. The Palmer character, no Superman he, is poorly realized and who could blame the reporter for ignoring him. I suppose his part in future adventures will be strengthened, but I won't be there to see.
