Where There Smoke Montana Fire Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Susan May Warren Janeta Holzner SDG Publishing Books

A hymn was subtly instrumental in a firefighter's deliverance and healing during and after a particularly bad fire, and when I finished this terrific book a hymn came to mind: "Lord, I stand amazed by the wonder of it all" . . . thinking of the wonderful talents He has given us to minister to one another. God has given Susan May Warren an awesome gift for ministering through the stories she tells. She is a master. She has a gift for making a tremendously exciting story come alive with word pictures that put you right into the center of the action and emotions of her characters and the circumstances they're trying to overcome. Without preaching, God gets the glory for the happy ending. When I finished the last page, I felt refreshed, having been reminded that God loves me and is always here for me. And Where There's Smoke is a truly romantic story, too! =)

Where There Smoke Montana Fire Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Susan May Warren Janeta Holzner SDG Publishing Books Reviews

WOW! I don't even have words! It goes without saying that I neglected all my duties and responsibilities once I started reading this. I LOVE reading about smoke jumpers and I loved the character development in this book. I felt even more connected to the characters than normal. At one point, while quietly crying, I had to actually pull myself back and remind myself I was actually not the heroine...the end of the sentence was redacted to prevent spoiling.
This author is one of my favorite Christian writers and I love how she weaves faith into the storyline without it overtaking the story. I am not giving it 5 stars due to a possible cliff hanger. Not sure how the second book with start out or if she even meant for the ending to indicate a cliff hanger but will continue to read the series as it is a good one. Kate and Jed have known each other for years and are both smoke jumpers. They have a history that goes back to when Jed showed up at her house when he was 17 wanting to be on her fathers smoke jumping team. Now Jed his the supervisor of the team and Kate has come home to help train the new recruits and jump her self. Not wanting to do a spoiler I will not give any other facts of the storyline away but will say many issues will come up between them and their decision to be friends or more. This is an interesting storyline and the author gives us a view of the dangers of smoke jumpers and what that entails. This is a good book that has some suspense, faith, and romance. Highly recommend it.
Wow! I'm not entirely sure what to say about this book other than... WOW! It was amazing, heart warming, deeply emotional and enlightening. A rocky romance between childhood friends turned more and the bond of grief that tears lives apart all wrapped in a smoke-jumping/firefighting backdrop made for a deliciously chaste yet wholly fulfilling read.

Kate and Jed are two people grieving the loss of their leader and her father, Jock. A smoke-jump gone wrong threw their entire team into grieving chaos and the deep bond Kate and Jed shared as young adults growing up took a beating. This was a story about the healing power of faith and while not the least bit preachy (in my opinion) it does dive into things of a spiritual nature. More-so, things dealing with the nature and providence of God.

I fell in love with the characters themselves and their story as a whole. Jed was the kind of guy we should all hold out for and settle for nothing less. The kind of man who puts his own needs behind what the woman he loves needs. Selfless and self sacrificing, Jed cared for Kate in so many ways while still maintaining his strength and manly essence. I especially loved how he acknowledged and protected Kate's virtue by not pushing their connection further as most men would. Kate had a lot to learn about relationships and how to love and be loved in return. Her home life growing up was heartbreaking but her character's growth throughout was inspiring. Especially the many times she faced adversity and never gave up.

I found myself excited and unable to put this book down the whole time I was reading. The background drama of the fire season, the threat of an arsonist and the blossoming yet tumultuous romance between Kate and Jed kept me on the edge of my seat. I've never read anything by this author before but I now know I won't be overlooking her anymore. Her writing style and prose makes for an engaging reading experience and I can't wait to see what the next story has in store for me.

If you're at all squeamish about God talk or strong instances dealing with faith based issues, you may not like this read. I personally didn't find it to be overly preachy but it did bring a lot of focus back to my own relationship with God. For that reason alone I'd recommend it but there's so much more within the pages, I'd recommend it seven times over. It was just an absolutely wonderful story of love, faith and forgiveness.
The new Montana Fire summer series by Susan May Warren is off to a blazing hot start. Book one, Where There's Smoke, is the story of Blazin' Kate Burns, a smokejumper following in her fathers' footsteps, determined to prove she can make it in this male-dominated field and Jed Ransom, fire boss and her fathers' protégé who will stop at nothing to keep her safe, including resisting his love for her.

The unique and original storyline begins with characters at odds with each other who are forced to work closely together while working out their personal differences and end up ultimately having to work out their bigger issues with God. In classic Warren style, what starts as an entertaining and thrilling read becomes not only an opportunity to contemplate Kate and Jed's choices, but the catalyst for their transformation as well. I love how Warren always brings the reader back to spiritual observations and insights.

For those of us who are Susan May Warren fans, it was fun to see how she tied the much loved Christiansen series into this new one. Darek Christiansen was, for a time, on the same Jude County hotshot team with Jed Ransom as was Luke Alexander from the novella, You Don't Have to Be a Star.

Playing With Fire, book two, features smoke jumper Conner Young, who was also in Warren's Team Hope series and Liza Beaumont from the Christiansen and Deep Haven series.

Burnin' for you, book three, features smoke jumper Reuben Marshall and pilot Gilly Priest.

Terrific summer reading until Warrens' Mercy Falls, Montana search and rescue team adventure series begins with Wild Montana Skies. Can hardly wait!
