England is under the rule of Oliver Cromwell, and young Lucinda Carstairs, daughter of a Royalist family, is in a state of limbo as her betrothed, James Happington, is in exile in Europe with Charles Stuart.
Lucinda unwittingly attracts the eye of their elderly neighbour, Ezekiel Watkins, a Puritan who acquired his estate through his support of Cromwell, and when her brother is seen on a secret visit home to raise money for the Royalist cause, Watkins uses this to blackmail her into marriage, and to her horror she finds that his puritanical mask hides a monster of sexual depravity, and that her life with him is a living hell.
But on the news that Charles has been restored to the throne after Cromwell's death, the loathsome Watkins dies of apoplexy and she is free to marry her beloved James - only to find he has acquired somewhat 'exotic' tastes whilst abroad, and things may have gone very much from bad to worse.
The final straw comes when James takes to using Lucinda to entertain his associates and settle his gambling debts, and so she must at last try to find a way to freedom and independence...

This book is bad. It's not even bad in a sexy, enjoyable way; it's just awful.Anyway, when I got this book, even though it was for laughs, I was hoping it would be a bodice-ripper with the usual "I'm sexually repressed, and now that Master John has forced me into his bed, he has awakened my savage lust" kind of plot. Unfortunately, that was not to be. The story, such as it is, goes like this:
There is this chick back in the 1600s who's normal and from a happy home, but she gets dragooned into this sucky marriage with an evil Puritan pervert, who isn't even hot. (He's not even hot in an evil way.) And he starts whipping this chick, and he blackmails the wimpy local minister into having sex with her too, and the minister is so depressed he kills himself. (This, by the way, is played for comic relief.)
Then this hot young guy comes to take over for the dead minister... and I'm thinking, okay, this guy is evil yet hot, so this looks promising. But all he does is watch girlfriend getting chained to a bed and whipped, and then he says, "No, sir, I don't like it," and he disappears from the story.
Then Cromwell dies, the evil Puritan dude dies, the king returns, and chick's ex-fiancee comes back, marries her, and takes her to court. But he's become a real jerk, and he's fat and annoying too. And he loans his wife out to a couple of BDSM orgies (lame ones, may I add) to pay off his debts. But then she meets the king, sleeps with him, and a few paragraphs later she tells hubby to get lost. The end.
That's it. "Puritan Passions" is not only distasteful and depressing, it's utterly banal. Please, avoid at all costs.

Puritan Passions edition by Kate Benedict Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Written with the backdrop of history and Olive Cromwell ruling England while the royalists are of to fight wars on the continent we see the Puritans controlling the destiny of the country and it's citiznes.
A beautifull young Lucinda is caught in a trap by the Puritan old and disgusting neighbour who having taken posession of the farm trough political means now also wants to take posession of Lucina. The trap is a secret letter to the king and royalist support by her father for the return of the king.
With this as a backdrop we now follow Lucinda though the back door into the hidden lives of perversion and debauchery of the Puritans and the clergy. Lucinda unfortunaletly may be able to fight the Puritans on a philosophical level but the betrayal of her body to the lusts and punishment of these perverts certainly does make it hard for her to show her 'displeasure'.
Oddly enough, when Lucina's true love, Charles returns from the war he is a changed man and worse than her Purtitan pervert husband ever was ...
To watch Lucinda deal with the trials and tribulations of the men around her was truly wonderfull ... this is a book I enjoyed thoroughly ...
