Sheila Quigley is without doubt the Grande Dame of BRIT GRIT.
With Thorn In My Side, she kicks off an exciting new series of books with a novel which is just as down to earth and hard edged as her previous books but is more high concept, as they say in Hollywood. Indeed, I can really see an adaptation of Thorn In My Side making it to the big screen.
In Thorn In My Side, DI Mike Yorke returns to the north of England, after a brief stint in London, with a possibly clairvoyant street kid called Smiler in tow. As soon as he arrives home, Yorke is caught up in a weird murder case that involves flogged corpses, missing kids, a strange cult and dark, dark secrets.
Thorn In Your Side has a smashing cast of characters and is as fast paced a page turner as you can imagine. This, I think, is a series that will run and run. It has all the Quigley trademarks such as warmth and humour but, in this case, the action is pumped up to the max!
In the immortal words of Spinal Tap, this one goes up to eleven!
Thorn in my Side is a barnstorming start to a new series and has all the elements you could hope for in a great crime fiction novel and one of the most unique and imaginatively constructed characters to grace print.
Great story. i really enjoyed Smiler and Aunt May. However the ending was less than desirable. I wish the author wrapped up all of the story lines instead of leaving us wondering.
I eagerly read all the books in this series waiting for a good explanation and finish. I was bitterly disappointed. It became very clear within a few lines what was going to be the outcome. It would have been more interesting to have s further understanding of THE WATCHERS
I felt very cheated having to buy 3 books for a let.down.
Essentially, I am a fan of Sheila Quigley's writing style - so even her foray into this da Vinci Code-esque oddity is worth reading just for the sound of her voice which, as always, is strongest when describing the areas and characters with which she is more familiar.
On the whole, a good quick read.
The story line was excellent. However, as a stand-alone book it lacked conclusion and you are compelled to read the remaining two books in the trilogy to arrive at any conclusion to the storyline. I felt it would have been better if the trilogy had been a single novel. In that way you would not have to be reminded of the character backgrounds and salient facts from previous books.
Once again Sheila hit the nail on the head with this one. I have read all her books and I am hungry for more. Great author. Would recommend. Five stars.
